Founded in 1980, the Michigan Environmental Council (MEC) of Lansing, Michigan, is a coalition of more than 70 organizations promoting public policies to ensure that Michigan families will enjoy clear waters, clean beaches, beautiful landscapes, and healthy communities for years to come.

We are seeking a dynamic, experienced professional to join our team as Director of Development. This position provides leadership for the creation and implementation of strategic fund development initiatives including: major and annual giving, direct mail, events, donor stewardship and recognition, and administration related to development.

The ideal candidate must have a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5 years of progressively responsible fundraising experience in a non-profit organization. Additional required attributes include: a commitment to the health and beauty of Michigan’s environment; excellent written and verbal communication skills; strong attention to detail; and the ability to work well independently and as part of a team. An interest in public policy and knowledge of social media is desired.

Position Description

Title: Director of Development
Date: February 2016
Exempt Status: Exempt
Reports to: President

Manage and perform the day-to-day activities associated with aspects of annual and major gift fundraising. Develop and execute annual giving activities and ensure appropriate acknowledgement and stewardship of gifts. Identify potential donor relationships, establish and maintain moves management processes, and support executive staff and volunteers in major gift fundraising. Management and execution of annual event. Support special projects and events assigned to the department.


Major Gifts
  • Develop and maintain moves management processes for cultivating major donor relationships according to industry best practices
  • Identify potential donor relationships and manage information to assist executive staff and volunteers in cultivating and soliciting major and planned gifts
  • Produce reports on major giving for executive staff or volunteers as needed
Direct Mail
  • Plan, execute, and evaluate semi-annual direct mail solicitations
  • Develop appropriate segmentation strategies to facilitate donor retention and increasing average gift size
  • Report results as requested
Special Events
  • Secure sponsorships for annual fundraising event
  • Coordinate and execute invitations, program, and event logistics
  • Manage event volunteers as needed
  • Follow up with attendees and report on results as appropriate
  • Maintain and grow the database of current and potential donors
  • Create reports to track overall donations and donations from specific groups
  • Oversee proper acknowledgement and stewardship of all gifts
  • Staff board committees as appropriate
  • Other duties and responsibilities as appropriate.
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in marketing, development, public relations or an approved related field; and
  • At least five (5) years of progressively increasing levels of responsibility and experience in fund-raising, development, and community relations work in a non-profit charitable organization.

Work under the administrative direction of the MEC President; day-to-day guidance will be provided by Director of Finance and Development.

  • May be required to work non-standard hours and to be available for occasional evening and weekend activities and events
  • Must be available for in-state travel [Driver’s license required]
  • Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment
